Ceramic is a newer material in the world of non-stick cookware. It’s widely considered to be the safest and most environmentally friendly option. Ceramic is free of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Most people hear the word ceramic and instantly think of clay pottery which breaks easily. However, ceramic coated cookware is made differently. It start with an aluminium base. The base is dipped in a bath of synthetic ceramic material which coats the aluminium with ceramic. The surface is left to dry. With ceramic coated cookware, they are usually lighter, less prone to chipping and “healthier”. The ceramic coated cookware is soft so you won’t be able to use hard steel utensils on the cookware. If you do so, you might end up scratching the surface and scratching the aluminium underneath. The most suitable utensils to use with ceramic coated cookware are made of nylon or wood. When cooking, the maximum heat the cookware should be used at is medium heat. Recommended never to cook with ceramic cookware at high heat. It can be safely used for 3 to 5 years under normal conditions.
